Shopping success as Ruth Walton signs books at Who Cares

Last Saturday 29 November 2009, Who Cares held a book signing for Ruth Walton, where she signed copies of her children’s book, Let’s Bake a Cake and Christine Giles the proprietor of Who Cares sampled cakes made from the book’s recipe with the Who Cares product range – organic, fair trade and local.

Ruth Walton joined Who Cares to sign copies of her cook book for 6-8 year olds, Let’s Bake a Cake, which contains a fair-trade and organic recipe and explains where each of the ingredients to bake the cake come from. On a one of the most successful days at Who Cares, all of the books available were sold and signed.

Christine Giles the owner of Who Cares said “Children and parents explored the major food groups and ingredients using the Let’s Bake a Cake recipe and a fair trade Christmas cake recipe. We really brought the subject alive and made it fun and interactive and of course the best bit was to eat the outcome!”

Ruth Walton said “Ever since I was a child I have been interested in environmental issues, and my ethical viewpoint comes across subtly in my writing which I think is a good way of teaching children about some of the issues, I think signing the books and sampling the cake was a good way of getting children to take an interest in where some of their foods come from.”

On Saturday Who Cares opened the doors at 9.30am and were overwhelmed by the record response they received for this event throughout the day, with more people in and out of the store than ever before.

Who Cares has confirmed that Ruth Walton will be in store at Who Cares on Saturday 28 November 2009 signing copies of her children’s cook book, Let’s Bake a Cake and Christine Giles the proprietor of Who Cares will be sampling cakes that can be made from the Who Cares product range – organic, fair trade and local.

Ruth Walton will join Who Cares to sign copies of her cook book for 6-8 year olds, Let’s Bake a Cake, which contains a fair-trade and organic recipe and explains where each of the ingredients to bake the cake come from. Customers will also be able to sample the chocolate cake in the book.

Since completing her Masters, Ruth has been working with Hachette, who are a part of the educational publisher Franklin Watts, to produce a series of books for 6-8 year olds. The Let's Find Out series includes six titles exploring different materials and where they come from. Through quirky illustrations and lively text, each book helps children to find out about the world around them.

165g butter
165g fair trade sugar
Three free range eggs
100g organic self raising flour
60g fair trade cocoa powder

For the topping

85g butter
100g fair trade icing sugar
40g fair trade cocoa powder


Who Cares Fair Trade Christmas Cake

Serves 6-10 people

225g fair trade organic sultanas
175g fair trade organic currants
100g glace cherries (rinsed/dried)
125g-250g organic brandy
225 diced free range English butter
225g fair trade golden caster sugar
Four free range local eggs
225g organic ethical plain flour
One teaspoon organic ethically sourced mixed spice
½ teaspoon organic baking powder
Pinch salt
50g fair trade almonds or pecans (roughly chopped)

For the Icing

450g fairly traded organic icing sugar
One free range egg white
One Juice of an organic european Lemon

Super Foods demonstrational event at Who Cares

Super Foods, Super Nutrients and Super Supplements –
Customer Event Friday 16 October 2009

Today 7 October 2009, Who Cares confirmed that the next customer advice day that they will be holding will be on Friday 16 October 2009.

Who Cares, Higher Nature and local producers will come together to give the local community of Bradford on Avon and Wiltshire a demonstration and samples of some of the most important supplements, super foods and recipes that are guaranteed to make you feel healthy and great this Autumn and Winter and also in preparation for a New Year New You 2010.

The caring, ethical, fair-trade and sustainable supermarket is holding the event to demonstrate locally sourced, organic and fair trade foods that are higher in vitamins, minerals and nutrients, such as broccoli, bananas, blueberries, tea, oats and pumpkin.

Foods such as these are known as ‘super foods’ as they contain higher levels of vitamins, minerals and other healthy food sources, for example bananas are packed with potassium to help lower blood pressure and vitamin B6 for healthy skin and hair.

Super nutrients include apricot kernels, sprout mixes and goji berries. Goji berries have more protein than whole wheat, about 500 times more vitamin C than oranges and more carotene B than carrots.

Higher Nature will also be advising customers on the day from 9:30 am until 11:00 am to show some of the supplements available that can help give you a healthier lifestyle. To book an appointment pop into the store or ring Who Cares on 01225 866590.

There will also be samples of foods on the day from companies such as Global Organic, Suma, JJ Organic, Doves Farm and Merdian.

An example of the recipes made with super foods is Higher Nature’s Organic Virgin Coconut Butter and Squash Masala Soup and Christine’s Scrumbly Fair Trade Banana Squares:

Christine’s Scrumbly Fair Trade Banana Squares:

Ingredients
175g margarine225g self raising flour100g porridge oats2 medium fair trade bananas, mashed25g fair trade sultanas (or similar)xylitol


Method
Warm your oven to 200°C
Cream the margarine
Put in the flour and oats to make a scrumbly mixture
Sprinkle half into a baking tray (12 by 8 inches) and press down lightly
Spread over the bananas and sprinkle the dried fruit
Sprinkle the rest of the mixture over and press down lightly
Bake it for 25 to 30 mins until golden
Sprinkle with xytitol
Wait until it cools (if you can wait that long) and cut into appropriately-sized chunks
Coconut Butter and Squash Masala Soup:

(This serves 4 people)

Ingredients
800g of squash (peeled and cubed)
4-6 shallots or onions (diced)
10g Organic Virgin coconut butter

Spice Mix
1/2tsp garam masala, turmeric, paprika, ground cumin, ground coriander, ground ginger
Pinch of cardamom seeds, fennel seeds
50g creamed coconut
1-2whole dried red chillis
1ltr boiling water
Freshly ground black pepper

Method
Warm the coconut butter in a large saucepan. Add the diced shallots and sweat for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, place the spice mix in a pestle and mortar and grind well to incorporate the seeds.
Stir the spices into the sweated onions and allow to warm through for 1-2 minutes until the spices start to release their aromas.
Remove the pan from the heat. Add the cubed squash, coconut cream, dried chilli and salt. Pour over the boiling water and return the pan to the heat.
Bring the mixture back to the boil and simmer, covered, for about 30 minutes or until the squash is tender and starting to fall apart.
When the soup is cooked, carefully remove the dried red chilli and then blend until smooth using a hand blender.
Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper and enjoy.

Town Mayor celebrates with Who Cares


Councillor Isabel Martindale, Town Mayor celebrated with Who Cares after 3 years of trading and 1 year trading in Bradford on Avon. The caring, ethical, fair-trade and sustainable supermarket had a birthday party as part of Organic Fortnight 5 - 20 September 2009 to celebrate their retail success bringing ethical groceries and household goods to the people of Bradford on Avon.

The party took place on Saturday 19 September 2009 from 9:00 am with activities and sampling throughout the day. Christine Giles, owner, welcomed new and existing customers and thanked the loyalty card holders.

During the day customers and shoppers were welcomed with organic wine, chocolates, food sampling, new products trials and free gifts. There were also special goody bag for all loyalty card holders including samples from Faith in Nature, Plamil and Doves Farm amongst others. An organic birthday cake was cut and shared on the day between visitors.

Christine Giles commented, “We really wanted to give something back to the local community and our new and existing customers by holding a day-long celebration for everyone to join in and trial products.”

Christine added “I was constantly complaining about the ethics and policies of manufacturers and companies to the point where I decided to open my own shop that sourced products as locally and caring as possible. I’m so pleased I made the decision to open the shop and source groceries that are caring, ethical and fair-trade. We don’t keep any information about our products from our customers.”

Bradford Town Mayor is Celebrating with Who Cares

One Year On – Bradford on Avon’s Ethical Retailer holds Birthday Bash


Today 14 September 2009, Who Cares announces that Bradford Town Mayor, Cllr Isabel Martindale will celebrate at the Who Cares birthday party which has been trading a year in Bradford on Avon and 3 years trading in total.

Cllr Martindale will blow out a candle on the Who Cares fair-trade birthday cake at 11:00 am on 19 September 2009 at 33 Silver Street, Bradford on Avon, BA15 1JX

The caring, ethical, fair-trade and sustainable supermarket is having a birthday party as part of Organic Fortnight 5 - 20 September 2009 to celebrate their retail success bringing ethical groceries and household goods to the people of Bradford on Avon.
